Reserve bed and breakfast lodging on Virginia’s Eastern Shore for your next vacation getaway. Eastern Virginia is best known for its beaches and colonial history. Some of its most interesting cities are Cape Charles, Chincoteague, and Yorktown. Don’t forget the fascinating Island of Tangier, where the community has been so isolated that they continue to speak a local dialect that has changed little since the first colonialists arrived from England.
Eastern Virginia is separated from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay.
Tangier Island may be intriguing to those who enjoy rural areas and have a fascination with language or history. There is very little in the way of modernization on this island, so make sure to bring cash and any other modern conveniences you may want.
Cape Charles is on the Delmarva Peninsula. It has a railway history as the terminus of the Eastern Shore Railway and still operates a rail-to-bridge ferry terminal with freight service to Norfolk. This town has the feel of a time gone by.
Take the opportunity to head to the renowned Chincoteague Island. Made famous by Marguerite Henry’s book, Misty of Chincoteague, this island still has an authentic pony farm where they raise the animals made famous by this beautiful story. Similar to Tangier, there is little commercialization on the island, especially by the beaches.
